John Gary Collins Obituary

Gary Collins, 61, a resident of Laurel since 1976, died June 12, 2002 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Son of the late John and Gladys (Hufe) Collins, he was born January 15, 1941 in Queens, NY. He graduated from The City College of the City University of New York with a Bachelor of Business Administration, and a Master of Business Administration.

Gary served in the Army Reserves, taught college courses at Jersey City State College, and worked as a statistician for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention / National Center for Health Statistics, where he authored numerous publications, including the renowned, “Prevalence of Selected Chronic Conditions: United States, 1990-92” report. He was due to retire in January 2003.

He played a key role in the growth and development of the Laurel Boys & Girls Club soccer program in the late 1970’s and 1980’s, serving as a coach, coordinator, and commissioner.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law Mike and Andrea; son and daughter-in law Shawn and Vicky; grandchildren Caitlin, Shea, and Lexie; sister and brother-in-law Joan and Bob; nieces Kelly and Donna, and nephew Patrick.

Visitation was June 14 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Fleck Funeral Home, with services on June 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s, followed by a going away party at the Greene Turtle.
